Sometimes I think Chinese citizens are absolutely oblivious to the world.  I mean, media and speech are so tightly controlled, what else can you expect?  I was hearing stories about how Chinese people actually think some fast food chains McDonald’s and KFC are native to China.  My friends have been asked if we have them in America.  I met some students from Hanhzhou in the Zhejiang province, and we had lunch.  It was family style, so there’s always tea, coke, and sprite sitting on the table.  One of the Chinese students was being a good host and was pouring drinks.  I was the only non-Chinese there, so when she picked up the Sprite, she looked at me and asked, “Do you know what this is?”  I was like o___O.  Sprite…  It’s made by Americans…

It’s just mind-boggling how ignorant they are really.  (Ignorant not meant to be harsh by any means.)  The Great Leap Forward killed hundreds of thousands of people.  Chinese students are taught (and believe) that these deaths were caused by a natural disaster.  I have a couple local Chinese students in my program, and when they learned of this, they were so amazed.

The Chinese government even told its citizens that the war in Libya was over Stargate for godssake…

  • But, it is over the Stargate…

  • stargate…… epic

  • stargate.  what do they teach em about Tienanmen sq?

  • Funny country.  Every country has it’s own weirdos and faults.

  • So they would think that they invented the Big Mac? and Do they call McDonald’s over there McDonald’s? cause if so, how come it’s written in ABC’s rather than Chinese character? Oh the funny things you point out (chuckles)

  • Wait Stargate? Like Bill Russell Stargate? Not as bad as North Korea can get Keystone Cop-y, saying that tunnels are just coal mines so they painted the secret tunnels with black paint to say it was coal.

  • People that live in China, really know nothing of the real world.. Only what there Gov. Tell them. So sad.

  • Stargate, like the sci-fi tv show? Epic.I think in every country there is some way, shape, or form of information supression. In America, the use of internment camps are hardly mentioned. For canada, it is our forcing out of the native peoples of Canada. However, it is hard to teach people new information after it has been learned.

  • lol stargate? seriously?anyways, that is not going to change soon, as long as u have a dictatorial government there.

  • @SuperRat - Unfortunately, that doesn’t only happen in China. Many Americans also believe whatever our government and media spews at us without thinking about hidden agendas and partial truths. All news is biased and filtered. The truth can’t be so easily revealed. That’s how governments control their people – controlling the flow of information.

  • @mocawong - That is true too.. We only see and read with people want us to know.. But it’s changing, because of youtube and facebook..
