What I’ve Learned from Working a 9 to 5
Actually, it’s a 9 to 6, but bear with me. Anyway, here is what I’ve learned from my week at work.
- Not all subway spots are created equal. Working 9 to 6 means I have to travel during peak rush hour. That means the subways are extremely crowded. I learned that the best spot, if not sitting, is always the against the back door, which doesn’t open usually. You can lean against it (well actually you’re not supposed to) and then you won’t have to hold onto any of the grimy railings. Also, if you’re against something, there’s less people in your immediate vicinity. Lastly, since you’re in the back, no one’s going to be pushing against you as they try to get in and out of the subway.
- Free time is a thing of the past. Can’t nap. Can’t fuck around on the computer. Can’t chat. Can’t go gallivanting. No shopping. No chilling. Not even time to call the Post Office for losing my package and telling me they delivered it. NOO TIME TO DO ANYTHING. T___T
- Coffee is a necessary food group. I don’t drink coffee, but I’m having difficulties staying alert at work. I also recently discovered that I can’t stay awake while anyone is trying to teach me anything. I almost fell asleep during orientation, training, and a team meeting. I think I have narcolepsy, and learning and academia are my triggers.
- Professional women especially have trouble using the restroom. My firm offers seat covers in all of its stalls and is always fully stocked. No woman needs to squat over the toilet, but for some reason, every time I go to the toilet, there is ALWAYS piss on the seat. It makes no sense! SEAT COVERS ARE THERE FOR YOU TO SIT YOUR ASS DOWN AND PEE WITHOUT YOU MAKING A MESS. Aside from this but related, I was in the stall using the restroom, and the woman in the stall next to me flushes and all of a sudden yells out, “AHHHH OVERFLOWING” and runs out of the stall as water flows into my stall. Just imagine a middle aged woman doing that. I think you’ll laugh too.
- Skirts are, in fact, better than pants. For once, I prefer skirts over pants. All my dress pants are tailored for heels, and with skirts, I can wear whatever I want, be it heels or flats. Heels are tiring after standing in a subway for a while and walking up stairs and down blocks. I just want to wear comfortable shoes and stay at my height of 5’1.

To answer people’s questions, I’m working at a professional services firm somewhere in Midtown. If you wanna grab lunch, too bad. My firm has a free cafe, and I intend to take advantage of it. I get free breakfast everyday, as well free fruit and snacks and whatever is left over from conferences, which amounts to a lot of food.
But the most important things I learned are that I still hate accounting and excel is the devil. Also the fact that even if I don’t particularly like a job, I can continue doing it without complaining.

could always go earlier and stick around later to avoid rushes, but i personally tend to grab a bite or go hh after work in the city then go home when trains are less crowded =p
Welcome to the working world. I hope you come to hate summers as much as I did when I had to dress professionally.
As long as you see a paycheck it will pay off
2) time needs to be well spent.
*faint
Totally agree with # 2. When I was in school M-f 9 -5 and working weekends. OMG. I had no idea how people went to the post office or got their car serviced.
I wanna go gallivanting too!! I fall asleep all the time especially after a big lunch.
For #2, You’ll have to go to bed earlier….no more burning the midnight oil on weeknights unless you will be drinking coffee or can nap in the office…..the realities of work. #4, Be glad you’re a woman for men are even worse slobs in the bathroom. It’s as if they have no potty training or aim. Some folks also consider hand washing optional so consider your hands contaminated whenever you touch anything public like a doorknob, public computer, etc. Touching your eyes or nose with contaminated hands is a leading cause of catching a cold/flu. Buy some hand sanitizer. Welcome to the workforce….now focus on saving/investing so you can leave the rat race early…haha.
I notice the vs bag in the picture. Got some new lingerie to show me?
Buy wraps and bandages and feet protecting products to help your feet when you wear heels.
Technically I work from 7 AM to 4 PM, but I can agree with #2. Especially if you need to make an appointment for something (such as seeing a doctor), you need to take time off from work to make it happen. Thankfully, where I work, there are only 3 other women I share the ladies’ room with, and they happen to be neat freaks so it’s not unusual that they are found scrubbing up the restroom after an occasional unknown visitor uses the facilities. I think you might need to get used to the idea of a regular sleep schedule…and bedtime. Yes, I said it. You need to go to bed at a decent hour every night to function properly the next day. Good luck!
someday, you’ll learn Excel is your best buddy. Haha. At least there’s plenty of help online if you get into trouble.Life is in the fast lane in midtown. That’s cool that your company has a free cafe. Otherwise, it’s fun to take a break and go outside and sit under the sun to enjoy lunch from a vendor.
i hate excel too!! but i need to use it to do my taxi hated working in the outside world. i remmeber working for this company freaking 1 hour ago…and that means i have to get up so early and avoid traffic. wake up 6am….catch train around 7pm and then get to work around before 9am. coffee…yes coffee is part of work lol but i havent had any for 8 months. its part of routine…get up get coffee. sleep earlier
i work 12 hours a day but at home now so…i get up at 5.40am…start work at 6am …no traffic lol and i shop online during my break lol….then wait for the post man to come during the week. its bliss loli prefer skirts over pants too! not short ass skirts..but pencil knee high skirts ..i find them more sexy!
cool sign

Word! I work in accounting too. I do taxes seasonally at one firm and I’m currently working as a temp to audit and do accounts receivable at a kids’ educational toys manufacturing company. Luckily I don’t have to dress up professionally at my current job since we don’t see clients, but professional wear can be such a pain in the ass to wear.I don’t mind Excel too much but I hate accounting. Damn you parents for forcing me into it! And woohoo for short people. I’m 5’0″ exactly
Oh and I love the outfit you got on in the picture.
Excel is the devil?? What dimension are you living in? D:
I have this innate fear that I will have to drink coffee on a regular basis to operate in a “professional” working world.
@fLiPgUy31O - you too!@CaKaLusa - oh… x_x@loneshadow_wolf - acct sucks! i’m def not going to go into acct after this internship!!@aznspartan94 - EXCEL SUCKS. it makes everything more efficient… in a very troublesome way…@Vitamin_D - ahh i had the same fear. i still am afraid to touch the stuff. i don’t particularly like the way coffee tastes.
@eatdrinkandbemaryy - Haha what do you need help with?
Hmmm, fattest of all your siblings, eh? You have a great sense of humor hun.
